For as long as humanity has looked to the skies, the mysteries of the cosmos—brilliant constellations, meteor showers, eclipses, planets, galaxies, and stardust—have captured our imagination. Even in the digital age, astronomy continues to be one of the most fascinating sciences, offering discoveries and wonders with every passing year.
The only planetarium of its kind in Uzbekistan, the Tashkent Planetarium opened its current building in 2003 as a gift to the public for the 12th anniversary of the country’s independence. Outfitted with advanced equipment, including the Japanese-made Planetarium MS-6 by Minolta and a powerful FEPAS projector from Saint Petersburg (installed in 2015), it offers an immersive journey into the universe with high-resolution dome projections.
Featured Shows
The planetarium’s 60-seat dome theatre is equipped with a state-of-the-art 3D projector. A minimum of five visitors is required to begin a session. Shows are available in Uzbek, Russian, and English. Each program lasts approximately 20 minutes.
1 In Search of the Edge of the Solar System
A semi-dome journey to the mysterious frontiers of our Solar System.
2 Return to the Moon – Forever
A film about humankind’s first steps in space exploration and the future of lunar missions.
3 Dark Matter
Explore the elusive substance that makes up 26% of the universe, and the scientists working to uncover its secrets.
4 When the Moon Visited the Sun
A charming, full-dome animated tale for young children, blending fantasy with basic astronomy.
5 The Restless Universe
A closer look at the dynamic phenomena hidden behind the calm night sky, revealed through X-ray astronomy.
6 Astronomy: 10 Steps Through the Sky (Step One)
Designed for schoolchildren (grades 4–9), this program engagingly introduces the basics of astronomy.
7 Constellations
Discover the legends behind the stars and learn how to identify key constellations in the night sky.
8 Depths of the Universe
A full-dome experience that expands your understanding of the cosmos and our place within it.
9 Archaeoastronomy of Mexico
A colourful exploration of how ancient civilisations used astronomy to build cities like Tenochtitlán.
You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how the universe formed, witness the birth of supernovae, and explore how cosmic forces continue to shape our world.
Exhibition Hall
The Tashkent Planetarium is proud of its knowledgeable, astronomy-enthusiast staff who are eager to answer questions and enrich your experience.
The exhibition hall features fascinating displays on the history of astronomy, the evolution of scientific instruments, and interactive models of the Solar System and constellations. You’ll also see a functioning telescope, rare photographs, mechanical visual aids, and information on lunar composition and crater formation.
Named after the great medieval scholar Ulugh Beg—grandson of Tamerlane and a renowned astronomer—the planetarium also hosts a dedicated “Cosmonaut Corner” in his honour. Ulugh Beg is celebrated for creating the star catalogue Gurgan Zij, listing 1,018 stars, and building one of the most advanced observatories of his time.
The cube-shaped building, symbolising ancient depictions of Earth with a domed sky, is topped with a celestial-themed dome and semi-transparent glass walls decorated with images of planets and stars. The architecture reflects the historic character of Tashkent’s Old City. A massive telescope model greets visitors at the entrance.
Guided Tours & Programs
Insightful guided tours introduce visitors to the geological features of the Moon, Mars, Venus, and Earth, along with discussions on the potential of mining other planets in the future. Themed educational tours in a playful format help children grasp school curriculum topics, while adults are invited to deepen their scientific understanding. Whether you’re exploring during a school field trip or looking for a memorable family outing over the winter holidays, the Tashkent Planetarium promises a journey that’s both entertaining and enlightening.
