Tashkent Railway Museum
To feel yourself a train driver, understand the mechanisms of steam locomotives and be transported to another era — all of this is possible at the Tashkent Museum of Railway Technology. The space will appeal to both fans of railway romance and history enthusiasts. And of course, from the "museum of steam locomotives" children will be in rapture — because here you can not only look but also tactilely explore any exhibit. Climb into a carriage, press the buttons of the instrument panel, have your photograph taken in the driver's cabin — easy!
The museum opened on a symbolic date — 4 August 1989, on Railway Workers' Day, marking the 100th anniversary of the Central Asian railway. The location was also chosen deliberately — the exposition is situated next to the building of the Northern Station in Tashkent.
What to See
In the open-air museum collection: 13 steam locomotives, 17 diesel locomotives, 3 electric locomotives, 10 carriages and repair-and-construction equipment of the past century. In three carriages a mini-exhibition is laid out that tells the story of the creation of the Central Asian railway, displays communication equipment, badges of distinction, examples of crew uniforms of 20th-century railway workers. All the exhibited transport actively operated across Central Asia for several decades.
These exhibits in particular deserve your attention:
- Trophy steam locomotive TE-52 — produced on German-occupied territory during the Second World War
- The oldest steam locomotive OV — which appeared in "The Elusive Avengers" — at least, so the legend goes
- The most powerful steam locomotive P36 — one of the last released in the USSR
- A tourist double-domed carriage — famous for its unique panoramic dome
The Tashkent Museum of Railway Technology stretches almost a kilometre in length and can be explored on a small excursion train that travels along a narrow-gauge railway.
The uniqueness of the railway museum is that it is interesting not only as an exposition but also as a beautiful park, where it is pleasant to stroll or hold a retro-style wedding photo session.
